The Handphibians had the honor of hosting acclaimed percussionist Pitoco de Aira at The Quadra for an intimate workshop. Pitoco, a leader in Maracatu Nação Estrela Brilhante do Recife, shared his extensive knowledge of Pernambuco’s rich musical traditions. The session focused on caixa and alfaia techniques, introduced new toadas (songs) from Maracatu Raízes de África, and included insightful discussions about the cultural roots of Maracatu. Beyond music, Pitoco also embraced Madison’s culture, enjoying a brat with sauerkraut—a local staple—marking a memorable exchange of traditions.
Pitoco, a prominent figure in Maracatu Nação Estrela Brilhante do Recife, has over 25 years of experience in Pernambuco’s vibrant music scene and has traveled the world sharing his expertise. His visit brought a unique opportunity for the group to dive deeper into the rich musical traditions of Maracatu.
The workshop focused on both the technical and cultural aspects of Maracatu percussion. Pitoco led a hands-on session covering caixa sticking patterns and alfaia technique, giving participants the chance to refine their skills with guidance from a true master. He also introduced the Handphibians to a couple of new toadas (songs) from Maracatu Raízes de África, the group led by Mestre Walter, as well as various baques and other vocal-focused rhythms.
Beyond technique, Pitoco provided valuable insights into the history and traditions behind Maracatu, emphasizing the deep cultural significance of the music. He shared stories from his lifelong involvement with Afoxé Yle de Egbá and Maracatu Nação Estrela Brilhante do Recife, institutions he has been connected to since the age of four. His knowledge and passion for the music were truly inspiring, sparking meaningful conversations about the preservation and transmission of this powerful tradition.
